This time line follows normal practice, the Julian calendar is used for dates preceding the introduction of the Gregorian in the appropriate country, or a suitable conversion is used for non-Roman based calendars where necessary. For dates before the putative origin of the Julian calendar (labelled BCE) it is well to remember that there is no year zero in that calendar.
CE = Current Era, according to the conventional Gregorian calendar in use now.
BCE = Before Current Era
The column labelled "Political events" is intended to give an indication of events that may have affected the developments of scientific thought, and to provide a comparison with often quoted or well-known historical events.
This is work in progress, and always will be. Where there is no citation for the information, it is to be considered suspect. Otherwise, follow the references and judge for yourself.
